Earlier today, it was reported that the rumored July 27 140-pound unification between Maurice Hooker and Jose Ramirez was being finalized, and now the fight has been officially announced for that date at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas, streaming live on DAZN.

Hooker (26-0-3, 17 KO) went to the UK last year to beat Terry Flanagan for the then-vacant WBO title, and has since made two successful defenses, stopping Alex Saucedo last November and winning a wide decision over Mikkel LesPierre on March 9.

“I want to show the world that I’m the best in the 140-pound division,” Hooker said. “My dream is to become the undisputed champion in my weight class. This unification fight with Jose Ramirez is a major step towards that goal.”

Hooker, a Dallas native, will have home field advantage for the fight.

“It will be a thrill to do this in front of my home crowd and I’m looking forward to the energy they’ll bring to the ring,” he said. “I am a dream killer, and Ramirez will be my next victim coming July 27.”

Ramirez (24-0, 16 KO) is the WBC titleholder, beating Amir Imam for the vacant title in March 2018. He’s also made two success defenses, beating Antonio Orozco last September and edging a majority decision over Jose Zepeda on Feb. 10.

“I am ready for my opportunity to unify the titles,” said Ramirez. “This is a fight I wanted. I told my manager, Rick Mirigian, that I wanted to fight Maurice Hooker. I know this fight can take my career to the next level. I want to continue making statements at 140 pounds. I want to make it easier for people to decide who the best 140-pounder truly is.”

Ramirez, for what it’s worth, is not worried about being the road fighter in Texas.

“I’m treating this fight the same as when I won the title in New York City against Amir Imam. He was the taller fighter, the bigger fighter. It’s sometimes easier fighting someone in his backyard because it takes away some of my responsibilities behind the scenes,” he said. “As the underdog, I have everything to win. It’s not just about defending my title but unifying the division as well. I’m ready to prove myself and show everyone what Jose Ramirez is all about. I can’t wait to bring Hooker’s title back with me to California.”

This is a terrific fight, and right now, we officially have the top four fighters at 140, all the titleholders, ready to face each other. We’ve got this on July 27, and the World Boxing Super Series final between WBA titleholder Regis Prograis and IBF titleholder Josh Taylor coming on a date to be announced.

This could also potentially lead to a full unification, but that’s no guarantee or anything. But the pieces are in place to move toward that.

The July 27 DAZN card will also likely feature Tevin Farmer defending his 130-pound title against mandatory challenger Guillaume Frenois, plus Murat Gassiev’s move up to heavyweight, but those aren’t official just yet. There will be TV competition that night, as Showtime is running Gervonta Davis vs Ricardo Nunez in the main event from Baltimore.
